John is an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist who originates and resides in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
John grew up trained in classical piano from the age of 5 and also gained experience playing as a church musician. At the age of 18 after being enrolled to study music at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, he was exposed to jazz music and decided to pursue that as his art. Since graduating with a BMus in 2010, John has been an active member of the Malaysian jazz scene and also currently teaches at jazz faculty of University of Malaya as the jazz piano tutor as well as facilitating the jazz ensemble.
John has performed at an array of jazz venues around Australia, Singapore, China and Malaysia. He has worked with a number of internationally acclaimed and accomplished musicians such as Shunzo Ohno (Japan), Michael Simon (Venezuela), Teriver Cheung (Taiwan), Diego Maroto (Mexico), Rodrigo Villanueva (Mexico), Maciej Fortuna (Poland), Chika Asamoto (Japan), James Flynn (Australia), Phil Scorgie (New Zealand) and many more.
John currently leads two bands which are “John Dip Silas Trio” with Jonathan Ho on bass and Benjamin Low on drums, both from Singapore; “The City Quartet” which consists of a collection of Malaysian musicians that John works with. Another project that he is part of is “SxM” which is a sextet of Malaysian and Singaporean musicians lead by Benjamin Low from Singapore. John is also on the committee that organised the first Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival in 2014 and is currently working on future Malaysian Jazz Piano Competitions and Festivals.
